Turns out all has not been lost to right-wing Hindutva supremacists in India. We are seeing a battle on Indian TV waves, as Turkey’s Ertugru<\/em>l<\/em><\/strong> faces off against Israel’s Fauda<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

According to Haaretz, this cultural war has been brewing in India for quite some time. The surprising thing is, both of these shows show two completely different depictions of Muslims. How are Indian Muslim audiences reacting to it?<\/p>\n

Let’s take a look at why counter-terrorism drama Fauda is popular in India. Given the BJP’s draconian takeover of India’s sole Muslim-majority state, Kashmir, there has been a surge in interest in ties with Israel. Its no wonder then, with India trying to emulate Israel, a model state for occupation and annexation. The two countries are united in their ‘opposition to Islamist terrorism<\/em>‘ as they call it. Fauda depicts Palestinians as the villains and Israel forces as the saviours more or less.<\/p>\n

On the other hand, Pakistan with certain Muslim allies has been trying to exert soft power on Indian Muslims. Haaretz<\/a> states that in order push back against Islamophobia, especially in Kashmir and India itself, Turkish historical series Dirilis Ertugrul is enjoying a massive upsurge in viewership among Indian Muslims.<\/p>\n

That is where Ertugru<\/em>l<\/em><\/strong> vs Fauda<\/em><\/strong> come into play. Both series are aimed at creating completely opposing sentiments towards Muslims. Both are battling it out in this ideological struggle of left versus right.<\/p>\n\n
