Burns Road is the city\u2019s oldest gastronomical belt which dates back to partition. For several years, the food street had settled on a weary compromise between bustling traffic and dedicated foodies, with its air charged with fumes and enticing aroma of <em>kachoori<\/em>\u2019s, alike. Fortunately, there has been a change.<\/p>\n<p>Kudos to the Deputy Commissioner and administrator DMC (South) Irshad Ali, the city\u2019s oldest food street has been granted new life, as it becomes a pedestrian-only destination after 8 pm for desi-food lovers.<\/p>\n<p>Pedestrians can now amble along the food street which begins from Fresco Chowk and goes all the way to Fatima Jinnah Women&#8217;s College.<\/p>\n\t<blockquote  \r\n\t\tclass=\"instagram-media\" \r\n\t\tdata-instgrm-permalink=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/CLWmkQunmVY\/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link\" \r\n\t\tdata-instgrm-version=\"14\" \r\n\t\tstyle=\"max-width:540px; min-width:300px; padding:0; width:99.375%; width:-webkit-calc(100% - 2px); width:calc(100% - 2px);\">\r\n\t<\/blockquote>\r\n\t<script async src=\"\/\/www.instagram.com\/embed.js\"><\/script>\r\n\r\n\t\n<p><strong>A little history:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Originally called \u2018Muhammad Bin Qassim Road\u2019, the road was renamed to \u2018Burns Road\u2019 after a British-Spy doctor called James Burnes, post partition. It is believed that it became a food street owing to residing Indian migrants, who wanted to continue their practice of eating out much like they did in their native towns. This stirred a demand, which lead to migrant communities cooking their traditional cuisines, many of which grew to become household names at present. <em>Caf\u00e9 Laziz,<\/em> <em>Waheed Kabab<\/em> and <em>Dil Bahar kay Dahi Baray<\/em> are a few names to begin with.<\/p>\n<p><strong>When to go: <\/strong>Post 7.45 pm. By 8.00 pm you will watch the street barricades itself. Yes, no trucks, buses or cars in sight! However, motorcycles are still spotted on the road.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What to have:\u00a0<\/strong>Prices may vary for you! Choose your choice of masala fish and watch it get deep fried before your eyes. We had it as appetizers \u2013 fried fish fingers make for a light meal, right? But truth be told, it can make for a delicious main course too. We met <em>channay ki daal kay<\/em> burger at Babu\u2019s and are totally smitten. It was instant connection. Watching your bun kebab being made live in front of you is a gastronomical experience you should not miss. What else you can\u2019t miss? From the moment it was served to us \u2013 in a plastic box, with sealed <em>papris<\/em> in polythene \u2013 there was a disconnection. It felt too sanitary for us, given our setting, the grand Burns Road. Very average, taste wise too. But then that\u2019s just us, you may like having your <em>chaats<\/em> clean. Us? Maybe not.<\/p>\n<h3>Main Courses<\/h3>\n<h4>\u00a0<em>Katakat <\/em>at \u2018Caf\u00e9 Laziz\u2019<\/h4>\n<p><strong>Little Trivia:<\/strong> Caf\u00e9 Laziz has been at Burns Road for some astounding 52 years, as proudly told by the owner. Finely done, with the perfect masala mix served with thin <em>chappatis. <\/em>Chicken Katakat was also scrumptious, but it tasted like a boneless handi. Fortunately, there has been no clear winner, as both Kabab Houses manage to entice that same gastronomical \u2018lust\u2019 for kababsin desis\u2019.
