As Meesha Shafi&#8217;s lawyer clarified, the defamation case in question is still undergoing trial in the court. He added that none of those accused by Ali Zafar has been convicted. It all started with DailyMail&#8217;s poor attempt at data journalism. The British tabloid quoted a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/pakistani-singer-faces-prosecution-for-accusing-pop-star-of-groping-her-11615554001\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Wall Street Journal (WSJ) published<\/a> on March 12th titled &#8216;<em>Pakistani Singer Faces Prosecution for Accusing Pop Star of Groping Her.&#8217;<\/em><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_304832\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-304832\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-304832 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/propakistani.pk\/lens\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Meesha-Shafi.png\" alt=\"Meesha Shafi\" width=\"1000\" height=\"425\" srcset=\"https:\/\/propakistani.pk\/lens\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Meesha-Shafi.png 1000w, https:\/\/propakistani.pk\/lens\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Meesha-Shafi-300x128.png 300w, https:\/\/propakistani.pk\/lens\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Meesha-Shafi-768x326.png 768w, https:\/\/propakistani.pk\/lens\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Meesha-Shafi-364x156.png 364w, https:\/\/propakistani.pk\/lens\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Meesha-Shafi-758x322.png 758w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-304832\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">WSJ report on Meesha Shafi&#8217;s #MeToo case<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>WSJ explained how the #MeToo debate set off in Pakistan after the <em><strong>Gal Sunn<\/strong><\/em> singer accused a fellow pop star of groping her. This was followed by a consequent defamation case Ali Zafar filed against her. WSJ explained that if convicted in the criminal defamation charges, the songstress is looking at possible prison time.<\/p>\n<p>When the DailyMail &#8216;quoted&#8217; the WSJ report they ended up claiming &#8216;Meesha faces three years in jail&#8217;. Previously, the Lahore High Court (LHC) and Punjab ombudsperson had rejected Meesha\u2019s appeals on the grounds that the alleged harassment was not covered by the workplace harassment law.<\/p>\n<p>The court issued notices to Ali Zafar and the Punjab government. The judges ruled that the points raised in the case must be examined by the court. The suo motu notice taken to define sexual harassment was clubbed with the case.
