Malala Yousafzai left tongues wagging with her latest interview for British Vogue’s July cover. The youngest Nobel Prize winner talked about life, culture, love, politics and shared her opinions on marriage and relationships.<\/p>\n

Speaking with the international publication<\/a>, the activist mentioned her dupatta<\/em> (headscarf) and said that it is more than just a symbol of her Muslim faith.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a cultural symbol for us Pashtuns, so it represents where I come from.” She adds, “And Muslim girls or Pashtun girls or Pakistani girls, when we follow our traditional dress, we\u2019re considered to be oppressed, or voiceless, or living under patriarchy.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Adhering to your cultural norms can be empowering for some and Malala stands for it.<\/p>\n

“I want to tell everyone that you can have your own voice within your culture, and you can have equality in your culture,\u201d she said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Malala Yousafzai on marriage and relationships<\/h3>\n

When asked about love and relationships, Malala first seemed \u201cembarrassed\u201d. The author writes that it is as if she is ‘torturing a kitten’. But she brings up the subject again at end of the interview and questions the reasoning behind marriage.<\/p>\n

Her views on marriage and relationships came as a surprise for some, but for many 23-year-olds, it resonates with them. She feels that it is difficult to trust people, especially when it comes to social media.<\/p>\n

“Especially [in terms of] thinking about relationships. You know, on social media, everyone\u2019s sharing their relationship stories, and you get worried\u2026If you can trust someone or not, [and] how can you be sure.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

And like most young people, Malala is wary of the institution of marriage. She talks about her parent’s arranged marriage and asks,<\/p>\n

\u201cI still don\u2019t understand why people have to get married. If you want to have a person in your life, why do you have to sign marriage papers, why can\u2019t it just be a partnership?\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

But her mother, like many desi moms, is horrified at her daughter’s opinions. She keeps reminding her about the beauty of marriage and her father often gets emails from suitors who want to marry their precious daughter. However, Malala is still not sure if marriage is for her.<\/p>\n

While she was once quite anti-marriage, she has realized that she’s still growing and as we grow, our opinions change.<\/p>\n

“Even until my second year of university. I just thought, \u2018I\u2019m never going to get married, never going to have kids \u2013 just going to do my work. I\u2019m going to be happy and live with my family forever.\u2019 I didn\u2019t realize that you\u2019re not the same person all the time. You change as well and you\u2019re growing.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
