James Cameron’s blockbuster Avatar: The Way of Water<\/strong><\/em> <\/a>has officially become the fifth highest-grossing movie of all time, dethroning Marvel’s superhero epic\u00a0 Avengers: Infinity War<\/strong><\/em> at the global box office.<\/p>\n

Avatar: The Way of Water<\/strong><\/em> has grossed $2.054 billion, surpassing Infinity War<\/strong><\/em>‘s total of $2.052 billion, which was released in 2018.<\/p>\n

The Golden Globe-winning film is well on course to overtake the original Avatar\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>(2009), which earned $2.92 billion at the box office, followed by Avengers: Endgame<\/em><\/strong> ($2.79 billion), Titanic<\/strong><\/em> ($2.19 billion), and Star Wars Episode VII \u2013 The Force Awakens<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0($2.07 billion) rank higher on the all-time list.<\/p>\n

Avatar: The Way of Water\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>also holds the distinction of being the highest-grossing film in the post-pandemic era, overtaking\u00a0Spider-Man: No Way Home.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

The Way of Water<\/strong><\/em> has grossed $1.5 billion internationally, making it the fourth-biggest movie in history. At the domestic box office, it has made $603 million, standing as No. 13 of all time. It is the sixth movie ever to cross $2 billion globally, doing so in its sixth week of release.<\/p>\n

Notably, this achievement gives James Cameron three of the top five highest-grossing movies of all time. however, his movies also carry steep price tags. The film required the development of new technology to shoot motion-capture scenes underwater, and needed to earn $1.5 billion to break even.<\/p>\n

James Cameron is hoping to turn Avatar<\/strong><\/em> into a\u00a0five-film franchise<\/a> and has co-written the latest movie with Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver. With one more week of release and the next major box office release, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania<\/strong><\/em>, not hitting theaters until 17 February, Avatar: The Way of Water<\/em><\/strong> has a good shot at surpassing Star Wars: The Force Awakens<\/strong><\/em> on the all-time charts.<\/p>\n\t\t
