According to researchers, the casual act of crossing your legs could be doing more than just making you look suave—it might be harming your chances of becoming a father.

A study led by Marc Goldstein, professor of urology and director of the Center for Male Reproductive Medicine at New York Hospital’s Cornell Medical Center, has revealed that sitting with legs crossed for extended periods can significantly raise the temperature of the testes, potentially impairing sperm production. And yes, it’s as serious as it sounds.

ALSO READ

Man Jumps Into a Lion Cage for a TikTok Collaboration

Here’s the science: the optimum temperature for sperm production is between 32°C and 33°C. Anything higher, and your swimmers might start to struggle. Sitting with your legs crossed for just 20 minutes while wearing trousers can raise the temperature of the testes to a toasty 36°C to 37°C—a level that could hinder sperm production.

“Temperature is a very important factor in testicular function,” explained Professor Goldstein. “Just one or two degrees is significant, and anything above the optimum temperature could be detrimental.”

In fact, the link between heat and fertility isn’t new. Goldstein pointed out that 2,000 years ago, the Japanese used hot baths as a form of contraception. While we’ve come a long way since then, the principle remains the same: heat and sperm don’t mix well.

It’s not just leg-crossing that’s under scrutiny. Goldstein also warned against other heat-inducing habits that could harm fertility, including:

Long baths, saunas, and Jacuzzis: Relaxing? Yes. Great for sperm? Not so much.

Sitting at a desk all day: Especially with legs crossed, this sedentary habit can trap heat in all the wrong places.

Tight leather trousers: While the jury is still out on whether tight underwear and trousers have the same effect, Goldstein advises against squeezing into restrictive clothing—especially if it’s leather.

Even the temperature of your bedroom could play a role. Goldstein suggests keeping it cool at night to give your testes the optimal environment for sperm production.

One of the sneaky things about testicular heating is that the effects aren’t immediate. Sperm production takes 77 days, meaning that any damage caused by heat won’t show up for about two months.

“If there is testicular heating for a couple of days, it will not show up for two months or so,” Goldstein explained. This means that chronic leg-crossers who spend hours a day in this position could unknowingly be impairing their fertility over time.

The good news? Occasional leg-crossing isn’t likely to cause much harm. But for those who make it a daily habit, it might be worth uncrossing and giving your testes some breathing room.

What’s the Solution?

If you’re a man hoping to start a family someday, here are some simple tips to keep your fertility in check:

Uncross those legs: Try sitting with your feet flat on the floor to avoid trapping heat.

Take breaks: If you’re sitting at a desk all day, stand up and move around every hour to improve circulation and reduce heat buildup.

Skip the sauna: Save the steamy sessions for special occasions, and avoid long soaks in hot tubs.

Choose breathable clothing: Opt for loose-fitting trousers and underwear made from natural fabrics like cotton.

Cool down at night: Keep your bedroom temperature comfortable and avoid heavy blankets that could raise your body heat.

The Bigger Picture

While the idea of leg-crossing affecting fertility might sound a bit dramatic, it’s part of a larger conversation about how lifestyle choices can impact reproductive health. From diet and exercise to stress levels and environmental factors, there’s a lot that goes into maintaining healthy sperm.

For now, the occasional leg-cross won’t ruin your chances of fatherhood, but chronic habits could add up over time. So, the next time you’re tempted to strike a casual pose with your legs crossed, consider giving your future kids a fighting chance—and sit like a man on a mission.

ALSO READ

Christopher Nolan Continues to Grow His Star-Studded Cast for ‘The Odyssey’

After all, when it comes to fertility, it’s better to be safe than sorry.
