After months of silence while Gaza burned, Malala Yousafzai<\/a> has finally found her voice on Israeli atrocities\u2014just as it became politically safe to do so. The Nobel laureate, who has made a career out of championing human rights, stayed conspicuously quiet as thousands of Palestinians were killed, schools and hospitals were bombed, and children starved. All this while living comfortably in the UK, where former UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak loudly cheered on Israel\u2019s actions.<\/p>\n\t\t

Malala\u2019s sudden outrage comes not after a massacre, not after a hospital bombing, but after the leaders of the UK, France, and Canada issued a joint statement criticizing Israel\u2019s \u201cwholly disproportionate\u201d military campaign. Only when the Western establishment shifted its tone did Malala finally decide it was safe to call out Israel, writing,<\/p>\n

It makes me sick to my stomach to see Israel\u2019s cruelty and brutality in Gaza. I am heartbroken seeing thousands of starving children, demolished schools and hospitals, blocked humanitarian aid and displaced families\u2026 I call on every world leader to put maximum pressure on the Israeli government to end this genocide and protect civilians.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

For many, this is too little, too late. Malala\u2019s carefully timed statement reeks of opportunism, not principle. She waited until the political winds changed, then jumped on the bandwagon\u2014hardly the mark of a fearless human rights defender.<\/p>\n

Social media users have not held back. One wrote, \u201cToo late Malala! Your initial tweets started off with calling it a \u2018conflict\u2019, and telling \u2018both sides\u2019 to calm down\u2014it was never a conflict, it was always a genocide and only one side keeps killing! Keep pleasing your western leaders\u2026 you will answer Allah one day.\u201d<\/p>\n

Another said, \u201cMalala\u2014please spare us. As Palestinians we see you for exactly who you are and what you have become. A washed up sold out perpetual victim the west uses like a mascot and clown. Grow up, wake up, get educated in something other than imperial subjugation and then come talk at the world. You\u2019re too late and we no longer care. My god you have zero shame.\u201d<\/p>\n\t\t
