He is the one that gets the people to do the greatest things.” — Ronald Reagan

Few individuals have navigated both Pakistan’s corporate and policy corridors with such enduring clarity, credibility, and conviction as Ehsan Malik. As he concludes his distinguished tenure as CEO of the Pakistan Business Council (PBC), this moment marks not just the end of a chapter, but a well-earned celebration of a transformational journey.

His time at the helm of the PBC was defined by institutional strengthening, purposeful dialogue, and a strategic repositioning of Pakistan’s most influential business advocacy platform.

With principled resolve, pragmatic thinking, and composed leadership, Ehsan Malik elevated the PBC into a credible, solutions-driven policy voice. Membership more than doubled, and the Council’s influence in shaping national economic discourse expanded significantly, earning him respect across both public and private sectors.

What truly sets him apart, however, is the culture of discipline, consistency, and institutional maturity he instilled. He combined deep corporate insight with policy understanding and anchored it all in an unwavering commitment to Pakistan’s long-term interest, a rare and potent combination.

During my tenure as Pakistan’s Minister for Investment and Chairman of the Board of Investment, I had the privilege of working closely with Ehsan Sahib. His wise counsel, steadfast support, and personal integrity were instrumental in steering several key investment policy efforts. Our engagements were always grounded in mutual respect, data-driven dialogue, and a shared commitment to national development.

Be it in strategy sessions, ministerial deliberations, or public-private platforms, his voice remained calm yet commanding, thoughtful yet firm, always rooted in facts and fairness.

A leading industrialist once remarked, “Ehsan never raised his voice, but his words always carried weight, because they were rooted in fact, fairness, and the national interest.”

I vividly recall one of our earliest conversations, where he earnestly stressed the need to transcend personal agendas in service of the greater good. That principle continues to shape my own approach to leadership and policy.

He often reminded us, “Advocacy must come with responsibility, and reform with realism.” That guiding philosophy shaped the PBC’s engagements throughout his leadership.

One of his most visionary contributions was the founding of the Centre of Excellence in Responsible Business (CERB). At a time when sustainability and ESG were still peripheral to most boardrooms, he was already integrating these values into the business ethos, positioning Pakistan’s private sector for global relevance and long-term resilience.

His leadership coincided with periods of economic volatility and policy uncertainty, precisely when Pakistan needed trusted, constructive voices to bridge the trust gap between the state and the business community.

Ehsan Malik was that voice. He consistently advocated for long-term structural reforms, emphasizing that competitiveness requires more than intent; it demands predictability, trust, and strong institutions.

His legacy extends far beyond the PBC, it thrives in the professionals he mentored, the reforms he initiated, and the balanced discourse he nurtured. He believed in people, and in ideas, and those of us who worked alongside him witnessed the quiet strength and relentless resolve that defined his leadership.

For those of us fortunate to work with him, Ehsan Malik’s calm wisdom and national commitment remain a personal inspiration. As Pakistan looks ahead, it will need more voices like his, credible, courageous, and committed.

As he turns the page to new chapters, there is no doubt that his journey is far from over. The institutions he strengthened, the frameworks he designed, and the values he stood for will endure.

Ehsan Malik’s leadership is a reminder that real reform is not driven by noise, but by nuance; not by personalities alone, but by principles and institutions. As Pakistan continues its journey, it will need more voices like his, calm, credible, and committed to the country’s long-term good.

“The greatest leader is not necessarily the one who does the greatest things.
