They often work long hours, frequently with limited job security, few benefits, and little public recognition.

For many families, employing domestic staff is a practical necessity. But in some cases, the size of a household’s staff has also become a symbol of social status, where having more people serving the household is seen as a sign of success rather than a reflection of genuine need.

The people performing these jobs are often among the country’s most economically vulnerable. Many begin working at a young age, sometimes leaving school early to support their families. Others spend years caring for other people’s homes and children while sacrificing valuable time with their own families.

Despite the importance of their work, many domestic workers remain outside formal labor protections. Written contracts are uncommon, paid leave and medical benefits are often unavailable, and wages can vary widely depending on the employer. Because their workplace is a private home, labor violations are also much harder to detect than in factories, offices, or shops.

This lack of oversight can leave workers especially vulnerable. Cases of physical abuse, verbal humiliation, unpaid wages, forced confinement, and false accusations have periodically surfaced across the country. While many employers treat their staff fairly, these incidents highlight the risks faced by workers who have few legal safeguards and limited avenues for seeking justice.

Women employed as domestic workers often face additional challenges. Fear of losing their livelihood, damaging their reputation, or facing retaliation can discourage them from reporting harassment or abuse. For those with limited financial resources, remaining silent may feel like the only option.

Another overlooked issue is the value of domestic work itself. An experienced cook, driver, nanny, or caretaker develops skills through years of practice, yet these roles are frequently viewed as “just” household work rather than skilled professions deserving of respect and fair compensation.

The comfort many households enjoy is made possible by people whose contributions often go unnoticed. Guests admire a beautifully prepared meal without meeting the cook. A spotless home is appreciated without considering the effort required to maintain it. Children grow up surrounded by caregivers whose influence is rarely acknowledged outside the household.

Improving conditions for domestic workers does not require eliminating these jobs. It requires recognizing that employment should always come with dignity. Fair wages, reasonable working hours, safe working conditions, respect, and legal protections should not be viewed as privileges but as basic standards.

A person’s occupation or income should never determine the respect they receive. Domestic workers are employees providing valuable services, but before that, they are people, deserving of the same dignity and rights as anyone else.

In Pakistan, it is common to hear domestic workers described as “part of the family.” Yet, in many households, that […]

[5,1

post-1482","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-culture","category-uncategorized
https://propakistani.pk/perspective/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/domestic-worker-185x135.webp",185,135,true
https://propakistani.pk/perspective/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/domestic-worker-300x200.webp",300,200,true
https://propakistani.pk/perspective/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/domestic-worker-1024x683.webp",640,427,true
https://propakistani.pk/perspective/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/domestic-worker.webp",2400,1600,false
Ahsan Gardezi
Culture","Others
The Comfort We Value Often Depends on Work We Rarely Acknowledge
https://propakistani.pk/perspective/wp-json/wp/v2/posts?filter&per_page=4&categories=5,1&exclude=1482
["GET
