By 2024, that had crashed by almost 90%, down to about $22.5 million, according to Invest2Innovate’s Pakistan Startup Ecosystem Report.

Funding picked up a bit in 2025. But not because more startups got backed, but due to investors making fewer, bigger bets on companies they already trusted. Fourteen deals. That’s the whole year.

Sit with that for a second.

This is one of the youngest countries on earth (Median age, 20.8. over 65% of population under 30). And the money that used to fund big, loud, growth-at-all-costs marketing has basically dried up.

So here’s the question I keep getting asked by my fellow founders: how do we build a brand Gen Z actually trusts when we can’t afford the playbook everyone tells us to run?

Honestly? Good. Because that playbook was never the real advantage anyway.

The budget was never the point

Let me kill a myth early.

Big Silicon Valley-style growth was never really a money story. It just had money attached to it.

Look at Airlift.

It raised $85 million in 2021, the biggest round any Pakistani startup had ever seen. Billboards everywhere. The PM tweeted about it.

Then in July 2022, it shut down. Just like that. It had all the budget in the world and none of the community that shows up when things get hard.

Now look at SadaPay. Much smaller war chest. But it built its whole identity around being human, not corporate, calling its users “SadaFam” and talking like an actual person, not a bank. It leaned so hard into keep finances simple, keep it human that it became part of the pitch itself. Users didn’t just download an app. They felt like they’d joined something.

That’s the actual lesson hiding in this funding crash. Money buys reach. It’s never reliably bought belief. And Gen Z, a generation raised being marketed to on every screen they own, can tell the difference in about three seconds.

Trust isn’t a nice-to-have. It’s the whole product now

The Edelman Trust Barometer has said this for years: 88% of people need to trust a brand before they’ll buy from it.

Think about that stat for a Gen Z audience specifically. This is a generation that grew up watching influencers get exposed, watching sponsored content, pretend to be a friend’s honest opinion, watching crypto bros vanish with people’s savings.

They’re not cynical for no reason. They’ve just seen more fake stuff, faster, than any generation before them.

So for them, marketing and trust aren’t two separate things anymore. They’re the same conversation. How your brand talks. Who’s actually behind the account. Whether that person disappears the second something goes wrong. All of it gets read as data. Data about whether you’re safe to hand money to.

What you can actually do about it for free

You don’t need a media agency for any of this. You need discipline.

Put a real person’s face on it: Duolingo didn’t get culturally relevant through a media plan. It got there because someone on their social team was willing to make a green owl act unhinged in public. Pakistani founders have an even bigger unlock sitting right there: an actual human being with a real story. Gen Z is starving for that. Most of what they scroll past is faceless corporate accounts performing a personality. If your founder won’t get on camera, find someone on your team who will. Facelessness used to be neutral. Now it’s a red flag.

Respond in public: Gen Z doesn’t just watch what you sell. They watch how you handle it when something breaks. The late order. The app crash. The angry comment under your post. A defensive, lawyer-approved reply reads as corporate. A real one, even a slightly messy one, reads as trustworthy. This costs you nothing except your ego.

Show your work, even the boring or embarrassing bits: Buffer built an entire brand on this. They publish every employee’s salary, their formula for calculating it, their revenue, their mistakes, all of it, in public. Nobody in Pakistan is doing this. A founder posting an honest ‘here’s what we got wrong this month’ will beat a polished quarterly recap every single time, because it’s probably the first time your audience has seen a company admit anything at all.

Let your first users build the thing with you: Ask your first hundred customers what they actually think – in public. Let their answers shape what you build next. People don’t distrust brands. They distrust brands that never bothered to ask.

Why this matters more now, not less

In July 2025, Careem shut down its Pakistan operations after nearly a decade here. It had introduced millions of people to cashless payments and ride-hailing. Inflation and a brutal economy played their part. When money got tight, the difference between companies that survived and the ones that didn’t often came down to whether they’d spent a decade building trust, or just building habit.

Over 80% of startups in Pakistan close within their first three years due to a trust problem disguised in funding-crisis costume.

The startups I’ve seen weather this downturn were the ones whose users would genuinely be upset if they disappeared tomorrow. And they built that feeling before they ever needed it.

So if you’re a founder here wondering how you compete without a Silicon Valley budget, flip the question. You were never going to win a spending war against people with ten times your money. You were only ever going to win a trust war. And that one was never about money to begin with.

What would your users actually lose if you shut down tomorrow?

Would they notice? Would they actually be gutted? Or would they just open the app store and pick whatever’s next, the way people do with brands that were only ever furniture in their lives?

That’s the only thing worth spending your energy on right now.

Let me start by telling a number that should scare you as a founder in this country.
