Do you remember those classic \u201990s movies, where Arnold Schwarzenegger in Commando<\/em> fought an entire army without a scratch, Sylvester Stallone\u2019s Rambo<\/em> defied the odds in three different war zones, and Nicolas Cage lit up the screen in Con Air<\/em>, Snake Eyes<\/em>, and Face\/Off<\/em>?<\/p>\n

It was a simpler time: the hero was untouchable. He didn\u2019t bleed, he didn\u2019t have flaws; he was perfect. Even superhero films were ruled by Superman, the flawless savior. Today, Superman has been replaced by Deadpool. Perfect action heroes have yielded to more nuanced, complex characters who still save the day but only after greater conflict, and with more help, than the old John Rambo ever needed.<\/p>\n

Imran Khan is as close to Pakistan\u2019s Superman as a real person can be: good-looking, charismatic, and well-educated. In every decade since the 1980s, he has achieved more than most of us will in a lifetime: World Cup winner, philanthropist, and prime minister. Many of us have voted for him at least once, and we all admire some part of his glittering career.<\/p>\n

Khan now appears close to striking a deal with the establishment, and if he does, it could mark the end of an era. Even his most loyal fans must admit he has flaws. My issue is not with Khan himself but with the concept built around him. Before his supporters tune out or write nasty comments, hear me out:<\/p>\n

He is not a messiah. No one is. The subcontinent often views politics the way Hollywood viewed action films in the \u201990s, seeing everything in black and white. With Khan and his peers aging, does this signal a changing of the guard? Can we finally stop searching for a savior? India sees one in Modi, and I don\u2019t envy them. Bangladesh is moving beyond Sheikh Hasina. Even our Afghan neighbors seem to be evolving.<\/p>\n

Could Pakistan\u2019s next phase feature more nuanced, imperfect heroes? A world where we are not forced to choose between Babar or Shaheen, Musharraf or Nawaz? A less polarized landscape where people actually read manifestos and let actions speak louder than words. A world where our hopes are pinned on the state rather than on the statesman.<\/p>\n

Maybe all we need is a little stability, boring and predictable. For instance, can you name China\u2019s last five presidents? Neither can I, yet look how far the country has progressed without a John Rambo.<\/p>\n

We have also had a love-hate relationship with our men in uniform. Liberals praised Musharraf; conservatives championed Zia; some even rallied behind Raheel Sharif. Just last week, Aurangzeb was almost as popular as his Mughal namesake. These figures may be heroes on the battlefield, but they cannot fix our economy. As recent weeks have shown, we are a nation that thrives in adversity<\/a> but struggles with consistency.<\/p>\n

Going forward, I hope things become boring: no conflict, no battles for power, just plain stability. I want future leaders to offer more policy than personality, more results than reputation, simply reliable statesmen. Our heroes can emerge in technology, sports, or business. In that world, you are the hero, not merely a fan. That is a vision we can all support.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
