All the teams have gathered in Karachi for the sixth edition of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) and it promises to be an exciting one. Every team will be looking to climb up the PSL points table to qualify for the play-offs and ultimately the final of the prestigious tournament.

Four teams that will finish with most points at the end of the group stage will move onto the play-offs, while the bottom two teams will be knocked out.

Historically, Peshawar Zalmi have been the best team in the group stages throughout the tournament’s history. They have finished on the top of the PSL Points Table thrice, more than any other team in the competition. They have gone onto play three finals, winning one of them.

Islamabad United, the most successful team in the competition’s history, finished on the top of the PSL Points Table once when they went onto win the title as well. PSL 2019’s finalists weren’t so lucky, as they went out of the tournament in the play-offs in 2020.

The tournament is being played at two venues this time around due to the COVID-19 protocols. The first phase of the tournament will be held at National Stadium Karachi, while the second phase, including the play-offs and the final will be played at Gaddafi stadium, Lahore.

The action will begin on 20 February with defending champions, Karachi Kings taking on former champions, Quetta Gladiators in the opening match of PSL 6.

Pakistan Super League Points Criteria

PSL is played on a double round-robin format. Each team will go head to head twice in the group stage and the top four teams will qualify for the play-offs. The rules and regulations of the tournament are in accordance with the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) rules.

The points system implemented in the PSL Points Table is the same as the points system in any ICC authorized franchise T20 leagues. Two points are awarded for a win, one for a no result and zero for a loss. In case, the match ends in a tie within the twenty overs, the winner will be decided via super over.

In a super over, both teams will play one over and the team with the highest runs in the one over will be declared the winner and will be awarded two points.

The ranking of the teams in the group stages will be determined according to the following criteria:

  1. The team with the highest points at the end of the group stage will finish in the first position.
  2. If teams have an equal number of points, then the team with a higher net run rate will finish higher.
  3. If the points and the net run rate is equal, the team with the highest number of wins in the group stage will finish higher.
  4. If the above criteria are equal as well, then the team with fewer losses will finish higher in the table.
  5. If all the criteria remain equal, then the result of the head-to-head between the two teams will determine the league position.

The team which finishes at the top of the table will face the second-placed team in the qualifier, while the third-placed team will go head to head with the fourth-placed team in the first eliminator. The winner of the qualifier will move straight to the final, while the loser of the qualifier will play the winner of the first eliminator in the second eliminator. The winner of the second eliminator will face the winner of the qualifier in the final.

If a match is tied in the play-offs, then a super over will decide the winner of the match. In case, the super over is also tied, then the team which finished higher in the group stage will be declared as the winner.
