Blackberry Devices to Support Android Apps: Report

In order to revive it’s declining sales Research in Motion may manufacture Blackberry smartphones that would run Android Applications, reported Bloomberg, citing three sources familiar with the plan.

Report says that Blackberry Devices enabled with Android app support and are likely to ship by 2012.

It said that new Blackberry phones will probably support Android Apps through an application player that will sit on top of the QNX operating system.

It will not be out of place to mention that Blackberry tablets with QNX based software were already confirmed to have Android support. Though, android support for QNX phones wasn’t communicated so far.

Blackberry struggles with number and quality of applications, but if android app support is added for blackberry devices then range for compatible apps for blackberry smartphones may grow up to six times of it’s current number.

Blackberry’s share of the global smartphone market fell to 12 percent in the second quarter of 2011 from 19 percent a year earlier, where as iPhone share rose to 18 percent from 14 percent, and Android stood at 43 percent of the market

  • At the first glance it looks like BB is going to switch their mobile OS but after reading through the news, come a new story…

There will be a player to run the android apps. It is just like running VMWare/virtual Desktop on windows/Linux. Android apps will not run on their full potential if used by some virtual machine and it will require BB to provide some very awesome hardware to run both OS supported applications.

People who have used Virtual Machines know that guest OS doesn’t perform at its potential as well as giving hard time to Host OS.

It would have been better if BB could provide native support to Android. They can develop same BB apps and their functionality using Android(I think better).

Keep the fingers crossed BB users out there…This is another major win for Android OS :)

  • The blackberry appworld is restricted to only a few countries, if they want to get into competition they should think globally. I have a blackberry device and when i try to install something using the BB appworld it says your country is not currently supported. WTH is that….
