Over 26 Billion Apps Were Downloaded in the Last Quarter

The global app usage peaked once again in the latest quarter, according to app analytics firm App Annie. Users downloaded a total of 26 billion apps in the third quarter of 2017 (from June to September) representing a rise of 8 percent compared to the year before.

The time spent on the apps has risen by a massive 40 percent compared to the last year alone, with Android users spending a total of 325 billion hours on apps. This was helped primarily by the increasing smartphone adoption and LTE penetration in India, according to App Annie, which allowed download rates to double in a year.

China Still The Biggest Market

The South-East Asian countries all saw growth rates in double digits during the quarter. China still remains the biggest market in terms of both growth and the total consumer spend.

The entertainment apps category dominated the overall downloads, including streaming apps such as Netflix and HBO, which grew by 45% on Android, or 30% on iOS.

Revenue generated from apps increased, with users spending a total of $17 billion on apps during the time period. As was expected, users on the iOS platform represented the lion’s share of the overall app spend, at $11 billion.

App Revenue to Reach $100 Billion

More impressive perhaps is the fact that the revenue from app stores is expected to reach $100 billion, annually. At the same time, the total downloads will reach 240 billion each year. Overall spending registered an impressive 25% increase over the year.

Google Play grew more than iOS, with a 10 percent increase in downloads over the past year. iOS meanwhile stood at around 8%, which shows that despite the apparent saturation in the smartphone market, the software business is as strong as ever.
