Cyber Crime Law to be Revised

A meeting of Standing Committee on Information Technology and Telecommunications was held on Wednesday in Parliament House to discuss the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Ordinance, 2008 (Ordinance No LXXII of 2008). The committee thoroughly discussed various sections of the Draft Bill and observed that provisions of the Bill were in overlapping with the Pakistan Penal Code and the Electronic Transactions Ordinance.

It was also observed by the Committee that some provisions of the Bill were against the fundamental rights of the citizens so the Bill be reviewed and redrafted. The Chairman Chaudhry Muhammad Berjees Tahir observed that with the passage of time the nature of crimes have changed and criminals use sophisticated methods, therefore, it is need of the time to promulgate the law covering all the aspects: and at the same time protecting fundamental rights of the citizens of Pakistan.

The Committee unanimously approved constitution of following Sub-Committee: Former justice Fakhr-un-Nisa Khokhar MNA/ Convenor, Sardar Talib Hussain Nakai NINA/Member and G.M. Chaudhry, Draftsman, Member, Mb Law and Justice. The Sub-Committee would review and redraft the Bill and thereafter submit the same before the committee for further discussion.

The meeting was attended by Roshan-ud-Din Junejo, Farhat Khan Justice Fakhr-un-Nisa Khokhar, Anusha Rahman Khan Advocate; Khawaja Sheeraz Mahmood, Sardar Talib Hussain Nakai, Marvi Memon, Sajid Ahmed, MNAs and officials from the Ministries of Information Technology and Telecommunications and M/o Law and Justice.
