PSL Points Table

The eighth edition of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) promises to be the best one yet as all six PSL franchises aim to win the coveted trophy in front of their home crowd.

The teams will be looking to gather the points and climb up the PSL points table in order to make the coveted top four spots on the PSL Points Table and qualify for the PSL play-offs.

All six franchises will be determined to finish within the top four spots of the PSL 8 points table in order to qualify for the PSL playoffs.

Defending champions, Lahore Qalandars will be aiming to become the first team ever in the competition’s history to defend their title while two-time champions, Islamabad United will be determined to remain the only side in the competition to win multiple titles.

Peshawar Zalmi, with a new captain in charge, Pakistan’s all-format captain, Babar Azam, will be hoping to change their fortunes and win the title for the first time since the second season, while Multan will be hoping to continue their fine run in the previous edition and go one step further this time to lift their second PSL title in three years.

Quetta Gladiators and Karachi Kings were the two sides that failed to qualify for the PSL playoffs last season. Both sides have made wholesale changes to their squad and will be determined to qualify for the next round this time and go all the way to add to their one titles each in PSL history.

Islamabad United, the most successful team in the competition’s history, was the team to beat in the group stages (and topped the PSL Points Table) last time out as they broke the record for most points on the table and wins in a single edition of PSL, recording 8 victories in the group stages.

Four venues, Karachi, Multan, Lahore, and Rawalpindi have been confirmed to host PSL 8 this year while the PSL management is still pondering to add Quetta in the list of potential venues for this year’s tournament.

The tournament is set to be be played between 13 February to 19 March with Multan hosting the first match of the tournament between Multan Sultans and defending champions, Lahore Qalandars. The tournament will be held simultaneously in Karachi and Multan before moving to Lahore and Rawalpindi for the second-half of the competition. The PSL 8 final will be held at Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore.

The competition to finish in the top four spots in the PSL points table 2023 is going to be exciting as the six teams look to win the grand prize come 19 March.

PSL Points Table Criteria

The points table in the PSL is a list of the teams in the league, ranked according to their points total. Points are awarded to teams based on their results in the league’s matches. In the group stage of the PSL, teams are awarded two points for a win and one point for a no-result or tie.

The format of the tournament is according to the double round-robin format. Each team will go head-to-head twice with other teams in the group stage to beat the PSL Points Table. The top four teams will qualify for the play-offs.

The points system implemented in the PSL Points Table 2023 is the same as previous editions of PSL or any franchise T20 league around the world.

Rankings will be determined by most accumulated points after 10 matches in group stage. The teams that finish in top four in the PSL points table will move onto the next round. Two points will be awarded for a victory on the table, one point will be awarded if the match ends in a tie and zero points for a loss.

Super over will be played if a match ends in a tie.

The following criteria will determine the ranking of the teams in the group stages:

  1. The team with the highest points on PSL Points Table at the end of the group stage will finish in the first position.
  2. If teams have an equal number of points on PSL Points Table, then the team with a higher net run rate will finish higher.
  3. In case, the points and the net run rate are equal on PSL Points Table. The team with the highest number of wins in the group stage will finish higher.
  4. If the above criteria are equal as well, then the team with fewer losses will finish higher in the table.
  5. If all the criteria remain equal. The result of the head-to-head between the two teams will determine the league position.

PSL Play Offs

The playoffs of the PSL are a series of matches that take place after the group stage of the league. The playoffs consist of two Qualifying matches and an Eliminator match. The top four teams on the PSL points table 2023 at the end of the group stage qualify for the playoffs.

In the qualifier match, the team that finishes first on the points table plays the team that finishes second. The winner of this match qualifies for the final and is one win away from being crowned the champions of PSL. The loser of this match moves on to the second eliminator.

In the 1st eliminator match, the team that finishes second on the points table plays the team that finishes third. The winner of this match advances to the 2nd eliminator to play the loser of the qualifier,, while the loser is eliminated from the league.

The 2nd eliminator match is played between the loser of the qualifier and the winner of the 1st eliminator. The winner of this match advances to the final of PSL, while the loser is eliminated from the league.

The winner of the match will be decided via super over if it ends in a tie. Unlimited super overs will be carried out until a clear winner is decided.
