Regional Telcos Slash Call Rates, Set up Funds to Help Pakistani Floods

Etisalat (UAE), DU (UAE) and Mobily (Saudi Arabia) have slashed call rates so that their customers can make phone calls to check the safety of their loved ones. The heavily discounted rate is available for calling Pakistan during August 2010.

Etisalat is offering 99 fils/min rate, giving Wasel prepaid customers the chance to call their friends and families with over 60% discount on calls made to Pakistan.

Mobily has dropped its call rates to flood-hit Pakistan to 66 halalas per minute to help its customers calling their homeland during the floods.

Cellular companies across the globe have set up short codes for donation collection for flood relief activities in their respective regions.

In collaboration with Red Cross, World Vision, UNICEF, Charity Funds and other social welfare organizations, cellular companies in Brunei, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Czech Republic, Canada, Egypt and USA have advertised short codes to their customers in which cellphone users can send an SMS message that will automatically contribute five or 10 dollars to the respective charities.
