Another man was arrested for blackmailing a woman on Facebook by posting revealing pictures of a woman on the social networking website.
With the “Cyber Crime Act 2016” in place, more cases of these sorts are being registered, with the offenders bearing the brunt of the law.
Sheikh Tauqeer Ahmed created a fake Facebook profile of a woman and uploaded illicit pictures of her on the account. He then blackmailed her into paying Rs. 200,000 for taking down the pictures. The woman with her family lodged a complaint with the FIA’s cybercrime wing and an inquiry was launched.
The cybercrime wing then traced the suspect and arrested him on November 9th. He has been charged with blackmailing and spoofing under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act.
After his arrest he was handed over to the FIA on November 10th for 2 days. Sheikh Tauqeer was then presented before a magistrate on Saturday. Sub-inspector Fazal Mabood, who was investigating the case, told the court that they had recovered passwords of the fake Facebook account and the email address used by the suspect for creating the account.
The officials have not yet recovered the extorted money from the suspect as of now. A six day physical remand was requested from the court to investigate further into the matter and locate and arrest any other accomplices the suspect may have. The court gave them only a 2 day remand and told the FIA officials to present the suspect in court again on Monday (today).
There seems to be an underlying trend to these cybercrime complaints and arrests happening over the past few months. The person usually blackmails a girl or a woman by posting her pictures on Facebook but the great thing is that they can now be traced and arrested promptly.
