Senator Claims There are No Child Psychiatrists in Govt Hospitals

Senator Tahir Hussain has raised concerns about the complete absence of a child psychiatrist in Pakistani government hospitals.

Tahir Hussain Mashhadi from MQM, raised the issue when federal minister announced a new psychiatrist department in Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS).

This separate psychiatrist department at PIMS Islamabad will be built at a total cost of around Rs 7 billion.

Upon the concerns raised by MQM senator, Dr Tariq Fazal Chaudhary Minister for Capital Administration and Development Division, did admit that there are no child psychiatrists currently present in any government hospital.

The minister didn’t say anything on whether any new child psychiatrist will be hired or not. He did, however, mention that there are psychiatrists available in four hospitals in the federal capital apart from NIRM Islamabad.

Non-availability of child psychiatrists in government hospitals shows how much the authorities are really concerned about children with mental health issues.
