Microsoft Brings 2K Resolution and AMD FreeSync Support for Xbox One

Microsoft, which has been on a feature-adding streak for Xbox, is finally rolling out the April update for the platform. The update promises to be one of the biggest yet for Microsoft’s consoles.

Chief among the changes is AMD FreeSync 2 support which, like G-Sync, helps reduce stuttering and dropped frames once paired with supporting displays. The feature, including HDR support, comes to the entire line, including the original Xbox One.

Next in line is 1440p (2560 x 1440), or QHD/2K, support for the Xbox One X and One S. Obviously, gaming on 1440p is only supported in the former console, with the latter only supporting 1440p/2K media.

Low Latency and Night Mode

There’s also an Auto Low-Latency Mode, which automatically chooses the Game Mode on a number of new TVs once you start playing a game, in order to reduce latency and delay. For regular content such as Netflix, it reverts to the original mode on the TV. Another small change is the theme changing to night-mode as the sun goes down.

Gamers will be able to share gameplay videos directly to Twitter, while the Edge browser on the consoles has been updated to allow downloading and uploading content.

Audio and Other Tweaks

On the audio front, spatial audio is now fully supported in the new update, while quick changes can be made to find a good balance between the game’s audio and the background music.

As usual, there will be a few additional tweaks and overhauls here and there, as well as a few features trialed for future versions.

That’s not all, as new features are promised for the upcoming May update, including the impressive 120Hz mode for displays that can support it. We’re yet to see how that’ll pan out.
