Just a few days into their release, iPhone users are reporting the first major issue in the new XS and XS Max models.
The past week, some users took to online forums to report that their phones weren’t charging if their screen wasn’t turned on. The charging itself happens normally once the screen is turned on though.
This follows up on various other issues iPhones have had starting all the way back from the bendgate on iPhone 6.
Apple has yet to comment on the issue, though, on the face of it, it looks mostly like a bug and not a major hardware defect. Hopefully, it will be fixed in an upcoming software update.
Early speculations point to the increased USB restrictions in iOS 12 as the culprit behind this issue. The new restrictions make it harder to steal data from the iPhone when the screen is off, though, it is mostly an educated guess at this point.
The problem occurs whether the device is charged via a wall charger or through a Qi wireless pad. The standard iPhone XS is apparently more likely to be affected with the bug.
Also, some users of the past iPhone 7 and first-gen iPad Pro have been able to verify the same issue in their respective devices, once they updated to iOS 12.
This isn’t the first time a newly-released iPhone or iOS version has come plagued with bugs. Naysayers will surely have another opportunity to point to the declining standards at Cupertino, though, at least in this case a radical fix won’t be required.
