Govt to Install AMI and ABC System to Put an End to Electricity Theft

The Federal government is going to install advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) system and ABC (Aerial bundled cable) to control electricity theft.

This was announced by the Minister for Energy (Power Division), Omar Ayub Khan, during a televised interview.

Omar Ayub, while talking to PTV News, said the government had devised a compact plan to curb power theft.

The minister said that the work on the new system is underway which will not only cut the power theft but will also ensure real-time meter reading.

He added,

The Power Division is engaging with the provinces on the creation of special task forces with the support of provincial governments, local authorities and law enforcement agencies for a crackdown against electricity theft.

He informed on the screen that ABC cable could stop all kind of energy theft.

The minister further said that the cable would be installed initially in the premises of IESCO, PESCO and LESCO with an estimated cost of $900 million coming from The Asian Development Bank.

Omar Ayub was of the opinion that the decrease in the power theft would also lead to a decline in the circular debt.
