Saqlain Mushtaq Terms Sarfaraz’s Removal from Captaincy as “Wrong Move”

Pakistan’s legendary spinner Saqlain Mushtaq has come out in support of Sarfaraz Ahmed and claimed that his removal from captaincy is a ‘wrong move’ at this time.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on Friday announced that Sarfaraz Ahmed will be replaced as captain by Azhar Ali in Tests and Babar Azam in the T20I format.

Speaking to an international media outlet, Saqlain claimed that PCB has made a hasty decision following the series against Sri Lanka, which can prove to be counterproductive in the long run.

They lost to Sri Lanka badly and because of that, they removed Sarfaraz. If I was in Misbah’s shoes, I would have given Sarfaraz one more series.

Saqlain was also surprised by PCB’s decision to appoint Babar Azam as the captain of the T20I format. Speaking in that regard, he said:

PCB is doing a lot of experiments and giving the T20I captaincy to Babar Azam is another. I don’t know how good he is or if he has captained at the under-19 level or domestic cricket. However, I always believe that you can experiment on a lower level like domestic cricket or Pakistan ‘A’ team. But at the highest level, you are there to win the game even if you are playing against the No.10 team in the world.

It is worth adding that Sarfaraz has been dropped from Tests and T20Is as well for the upcoming tour of Australia as the squads were announced by Misbah-ul-Haq.
