Huawei Launches Entry Level Y-Series Phones & MatePad T8

Huawei’s list of additions to its entry-level lineups appears to be on a roll. The Chinese phone maker has added two new budget devices to its Y lineup of phones known as the Y5P and Y6P, both of which cost less than $200.

Design and Display

The Y5P is the smaller and the cheaper one out of the two. It has a 5.45-inch LCD with classical top and bottom bezels, HD+ resolution, and an 18:9 aspect ratio. There is a dual-camera setup at the back housed in a large square-shaped camera module that also holds the LED flash.

The Y6P has a larger 6.3-inch LCD with the same HD+ resolution, but a dot drop notch for the front camera, smaller surrounding bezels and rounded corners. The back has a fingerprint scanner in the middle and a vertical triple camera sensor in the top left corner above the LED flash.

Internals and Storage

Both phones are powered by the entry-level Helio P22 chipset, but the Y5P only has 2GB RAM with 32GB storage, whereas the Y6P is able to go up to 64GB storage and 3GB RAM. A micro SD card slot is available on both devices for storage expansion.

Both phones also boot Huawei’s latest EMUI 10.1 skin on top of Android 10, but lack Google’s Mobile Services, which means that buyers will have to opt for Huawei’s alternative services, or side-load GMS.

Cameras

The dual camera lens at the back of the Y5P includes an 8MP main shooter and a 2MP depth sensor for bokeh shots. The front-facing camera is a 5MP lens and both lenses at the front and back are capable of recording 1080p videos at 30 FPS.

The Y6P, on the other hand, has a 13MP main sensor at the back, an 8MP ultrawide lens, and a 2MP depth sensor. The 8MP front camera inside the dot drop notch is capable of taking wide-angle shots and HDR photos.

Battery and Pricing

The Huawei Y6P gets a larger 5,000 mAh battery while the Y5P has a 3,020 mAh cell. Regardless, the Y5P should still be able to last sufficiently long due to its lower-end specifications.

The Huawei Y5P will go for $135 only, while the Y6P will be available for $180 once they go on sale later this month.

Huawei unveils Y6P and Y5P entry-level phones alongside MatePad T8 tablet

Alongside the two entry-level smartphones, Huawei has also unveiled a mid-range tablet which is the third addition this year after the flagship MatePad Pro 5G and the MatePad 10.4.

Huawei’s latest slate has an 8-inch screen with 800p resolution (12oo x 800 pixels) with conventional bezels at the top and bottom. There is a 2MP selfie camera and a single 5MP primary camera at the back with a significant bump.

The MediaTek MTK8768 SoC powers the internals with two different storage options including 16GB and 32GB, but both are limited to 2GB of RAM. However, there is a micro SD card slot for expandable storage. It boots EMUI 10.1 on top of Android, and also lacks Google Mobile Services.

The massive 5,100 mAh battery should be more than enough to keep the tablet going for a long while. The Huawei MatePad T8 will only come in Blue color once it goes for sale later this month for only $108.
