Petroleum Division and Exporters Likely to Clash Over Gas Supply in ECC Meeting

Considering the possibility of an acute shortage of gas supply in the country, the government has decided to shut down the gas supply to the export industry once a week, a national daily reported on Wednesday.

This emergency solution of sorts will only be implemented if the gas shortage in the country becomes severe. The Petroleum Division will get this policy approved through the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC), scheduled to meet later today (Wednesday).

This move has come under severe criticism by the export industry. Adviser to Prime Minister on Commerce and Investment, Abdul Razak Dawood, also expressed his annoyance over this possible move by the Petroleum Division, saying that it would hamper meeting the targets of the export orders. This means today’s ECC meeting will undergo some heated debate between the Petroleum Division and the export industry representatives.

Petroleum Division is also seeking closure of the CNG sector for 4-5 days in a week as well as halting the gas supply to captive power plants for the general industry and fertilizer sector, the newspaper reported. It is also likely that the division will also propose curtailing the RLNG supply to power plants.

This last suggestion was made by the Petroleum Division on Nov 26, 2020, when it recommended to the Cabinet Committee on Energy (CCOE) to stop gas supply to the export sector captive plants that have an electricity connection. The CCOE has rejected this recommendation once. Now the ECC meeting will decide on this and the other policy approvals sought by the division.
