Pakistan Surpasses One Million COVID-19 Cases

Pakistan reported 1,425 new cases of COVID-19 on Friday, surpassing one million total cases since the first one was reported in the country on 26 February 2020. With new cases, the overall national caseload currently stands at 1,000,034.

According to the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC), out of 25,215 tests conducted in the last 24 hours, 1,425 returned positive, taking the positivity ratio to 5.65 percent, the highest since May.

The NCOC reported that Pakistan’s tally crossed 900,000 on 23 May, indicating that the country recorded 100,000 new cases in the last two months.

The grim milestone also makes Pakistan the 30th country to record one million coronavirus cases since its inception in China’s Wuhan in December 2019.

Meanwhile, the overall COVID-related death toll stands at 22,939 with 11 new deaths. While the number of recovered patients stands at 923,472 and the active cases of the country are 53,623.

Here is a province/state-wise breakdown of cases and deaths reported thus far:

  • Sindh: 362,182 cases, 5,785 deaths
  • Punjab: 351,707 cases, 10,909 deaths
  • Khyber Pakhtunkhwa: 141,359 cases, 4,405 deaths
  • Islamabad: 85,230 cases, 789 deaths
  • Balochistan: 29,357 cases, 321 deaths
  • Azad Jammu and Kashmir: 22,592 cases, 608 deaths
  • Gilgit-Baltistan: 7,607 cases, 122 deaths
