The President of Pakistan, Dr. Arif Alvi, shared the history of electronic voting machines used in elections in the Philippines in an attempt to counter an ongoing controversy about their use in Pakistan.
He highlighted it in a tweet that read: “Very imp. data on the history of EVM elections in Philippine. Increasing voter confidence, phenomenal reductions in election petitions, murders & violence”.
“Would love to see such a change in Pakistan. In our case with paper ballots to support electronic count, our system is stronger,” he added.
The ruling PTI government is adamant about the use of electronic voting machines (EVMs) in the upcoming general elections but the Election Commission of Pakistan has locked horns with it over the matter.
The Election Commission of Pakistan submitted its report on EVMs containing 37 objections to the Parliamentary Standing Committee. However, it agreed that if the EVMs are introduced and used gradually, they can be helpful in ensuring transparency in voting.
