The Capital Development Authority (CDA) on Monday launched an ambitious tree plantation drive on Margalla Hills, aiming to plant one million trees. The initiative was inaugurated at a ceremony near Trail 3, where Federal Information Minister Attaullah Tarar and Coordinator to the Prime Minister on Climate Change Romina Khurshid Alam planted saplings.
In his address, Information Minister Attaullah Tarar emphasized the significance of Margalla Hills as a vital part of Islamabad’s identity. He stressed the collective responsibility of both citizens and the government to protect these hills from environmental hazards. Tarar highlighted that Islamabad’s air quality is superior to that of other cities and attributed this to ongoing conservation efforts.
“Climate change is a major challenge that we must confront head-on,” said Tarar. “By planting more saplings, we can combat this challenge effectively. I urge all segments of society to actively participate in tree plantation campaigns to safeguard the future of our coming generations.”
Tarar noted that while Pakistan contributes only two percent of global carbon emissions, it remains one of the most affected countries by climate change. He called on high carbon-emitting nations to collaborate with Pakistan in addressing this global challenge.
PM’s Coordinator on Climate Change Romina Khurshid Alam echoed the minister’s sentiments, urging the public to plant trees and emphasizing the need for coordinated efforts to ensure the success of such campaigns.
According to the CDA, this tree plantation drive aims to promote environmental conservation and mitigate the adverse effects of heat waves and human activities. The event marked a significant step in the city’s ongoing efforts to enhance its green cover and improve environmental sustainability.
CDA Chairman Mohammad Ali Randhawa expressed his gratitude to the information minister and the PM’s aide for their support and participation in the event. He highlighted that the initiative has garnered pledges for four million tree plantations from the corporate sector and civil society. The CDA has already arranged for one million trees to be planted as part of this drive.
“The collaboration between the CDA, corporate sector, and civil society is crucial for the success of this initiative,” said Randhawa. “Together, we can create a greener and healthier environment for future generations.”
