On Tuesday, the Pakistan Navy announced that it has taken command of a multinational task force dedicated to maritime security in the southeastern Middle East, covering the Arabian Sea, Gulf of Oman, and Gulf of Aden.
Combined Task Force 150 (CTF-150) is a component of the Combined Maritime Forces (CMF), a coalition of 34 nations dedicated to enhancing security and stability in critical global shipping routes.
The task force focuses on counter-terrorism, anti-smuggling efforts, and improving navigational security. The CMF’s work is essential for protecting global maritime routes, especially in areas known for piracy and militancy.
In Bahrain, Pakistan’s Commodore Asim Sohail Malik took over command from Captain Colin Mathews of the Royal Canadian Navy.
“Commodore Asim Sohail Malik underlined that CTF-150’s area of responsibility consists of some of the world’s most challenging and important international waters,” said the Directorate General Public Relations of the Pakistan Navy.
“He assured that his team will strive to further strengthen efforts of the multinational task force to provide robust security in the vital maritime region,” it added.
The Pakistan Navy has previously commanded the task force 12 times. The recent handover of command for the 13th time underscores the “trust and respect” that the coalition partners have in the Pakistan Navy, according to the statement.
Commander Malik assured during the change of command ceremony that the Pakistan Navy remains committed to collaborating with coalition navies to uphold peace and stability within the task force’s operational area.
