The Parks and Horticulture Authority (PHA) has decided to lease out underpasses and pedestrian bridges across Lahore for advertising to increase its revenue.
This initiative is part of a larger effort to convert public infrastructure into revenue-generating assets. According to PHA Director General Muhammad Tahir Wattoo, 11 underpasses and an equal number of pedestrian bridges, primarily along the canal but not exclusively, will be available for static advertisements.
The authority expects to generate over 85 million rupees annually from this venture. The underpasses available for leasing are situated on both sides of the canal, spanning from Dharampura to Doctors’ Hospital, Ghulab Devi Hospital, and the Lal Shahbaz Qalandar underpass at Firdous Market.
The department will also offer pedestrian bridges for advertising on Canal Road, Syed Maratib Ali Road, Punjab University Gate 4, Jinnah Hospital, Wafaqi Colony, Johar Town H Block, Aiwan-i-Quaid-i-Azam, and Nazaria-i-Pakistan Trust.
Mr. Wattoo explained that this initiative is part of a broader strategy to boost the PHA’s own-source revenue. The PHA had achieved a record revenue of Rs. 2.5 billion in the previous fiscal year.
He added that leveraging commercial advertising on pedestrian bridges and other infrastructure aims to generate a consistent income stream. This strategy is crucial for reducing dependence on external funding and ensuring long-term financial stability.
