The Punjab government is expected to issue a notification that would add four more tehsils to the Rawalpindi district. This change would increase the total number of subdistricts in Rawalpindi from seven to eleven.
Under the new plan, the government intends to split the Rawalpindi City, Saddar, and Cantonment tehsils, increasing their count from three to six. Furthermore, part of the Gujar Khan tehsil, specifically Daultala with a population of 200,000, will be designated as a separate tehsil.
According to a senior district administration official, this move aims to improve civic services, reducing the need for residents to visit central district offices in Raja Bazaar or Rawat.
The official stated that the population in Rawalpindi’s tehsils has significantly grown, and the current staff is inadequate to meet residents’ needs. He explained that the creation of new tehsils would better serve the public, allowing the Land Revenue Department to manage records more effectively and prevent illegal construction in urban areas.
A Land Revenue Department official stated that the district administration has proposed splitting Gujar Khan into two tehsils. The proposal for creating the Daultala tehsil is still under review by the Punjab Board of Revenue, and a notification will follow if it is approved.
During a visit to Rawalpindi on August 19, Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz approved the increase in the number of assistant commissioners in Rawalpindi and Lahore. Five new tehsils are set to be created in Lahore, with plans to implement a similar scheme in Rawalpindi afterward.
