Power generation in the country went down by 17.4 percent YoY to 13,179 gigawatts per hour (GWh) in August 2024, and down 11.4 percent MoM compared to 14,880 GWh the previous month.
According to Arif Habib Limited, this decline in generation is expected to result in higher capacity charges for the 2QFY25 QTA.
The cost of fuel for power generation decreased by 9.3 percent YoY to an average of Rs. 7.49/unit in August 2024.
For 2MFY25, power generation fell by 8.9 percent YoY to 28,059 GWh (18,857 MW) compared to 30,798 GWh (20,697 MW) in the SPLY.
Major contributors during August 2024 were Hydel (40.7 percent), Nuclear (16.6 percent), and RLNG (15 percent).
Hydel-based power generation decreased by 10.7 percent YoY to 5,362 GWh in August 2024 from 6,006 GWh last year. On an MoM basis, Hydel-based power output increased by 0.4 percent in August from 5,341 GWh in the previous month.
Nuclear-based power generation increased by 7.3 percent YoY to 2,190 GWh in August 2024 from 2,040 GWh last year and up by 10.2 percent MoM compared to 1,988 GWh in July 2024.
RLNG power generation is down by 23.2 percent YoY from 2,741 GWh in August 2023 to 2,106 GWh in August 2024. On an MoM basis, RLNG generation is down 29.1 percent.
Coal (imported) power generation decreased by 20.3 percent YoY to 1,306 GWh in August 2024 from 1,638 GWh last year, while monthly coal (imported) power generation shows a decrease of 13.3 percent from 1,506 GWh observed the previous month.
Solar-based generation is up 16.6 percent YoY from 84 GWh last year to 98 GWh in August 2024.
Fuel Cost
During August 2024, fuel cost for power generation decreased by 9.3 percent YoY and also 16.4 percent MoM to an average of Rs. 7.49/unit, compared to an average cost of Rs. 8.27/unit in August 2023 and Rs. 8.96/unit in July 2024, respectively.
Furnace Oil was the priciest with a cost of Rs. 30.32 per unit in August 2024 while Nuclear fuel was one of the cheapest during the same period.
