India’s External Affairs Minister (EAM) S. Jaishankar will represent the country at the upcoming Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit, which is set to take place in Islamabad on October 15 and 16, according to Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal.
During a press briefing, Jaiswal confirmed that Jaishankar will head the Indian delegation for this significant regional event. Pakistan, which currently holds the rotating chairmanship of the SCO Council of Heads of Government (CHG), will host the two-day summit.
The summit will focus on strengthening economic, financial, and cultural cooperation among the member states. The event will be preceded by ministerial meetings and rounds of senior official discussions addressing a wide range of issues.
The SCO is an important trans-regional organisation that includes India, Pakistan, China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan. Over the years, the group has played a key role in fostering economic collaboration and addressing security concerns in the region.
While India hosted last year’s SCO Summit in a virtual format, with Pakistan’s former Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif participating via video link, the two countries continue to engage through the forum. Earlier this year, Pakistan’s then Foreign Minister, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, attended an in-person SCO meeting in Goa, marking the first high-level Pakistani visit to India in over a decade.
This summit will serve as another important platform for both nations to participate in regional discussions under the umbrella of the SCO.
