Federal Minister for Finance and Revenue Muhammad Aurangzeb attended the Roundtable with Institutional Investors organized by Jefferies International.
He briefed the investors about positive economic indicators of the country on the back of the successful SBA and highlighted reforms to increase tax-to-GDP ratio, reduce losses in the energy sector, improve the governance and management of SOEs, accelerate the privatization and contain expenditures by right-sizing the Federal Government. The event concluded with Q&A session from the investors.
Finance Minister attended the meeting of the Managing Director, IMF with Finance Ministers, Central Bank Governors, and Heads of Regional Financial Institutions of MENAP. In his intervention, he emphasized the need for IMF to embed social protection measures in its lending frameworks. He urged the Fund to focus on enhancing climate resilience financing and continue to expand debt relief and concessional financing mechanisms to support vulnerable nations. He also welcomed the incorporation of emerging challenges like climate-related risks, domestic public debt, and complex debt restructuring scenarios in the review of the Low-Income Countries Debt Sustainability Framework (LIC-DSF).
Finance Minister held a meeting with the delegation of Islamic Trade Finance Corporation (ITFC) led by its CEO Eng. Hani Salem Sonbol. He appreciated the support from ITFC for commodity financing of USD 3 billion through a Framework Agreement over the next three years and immediate provision of USD 269 million through a mix of direct financing and syndication. ITFC expressed its resolve to diversify its portfolio in Pakistan. Finance Minister assured full support in this regard.
Finance Minister met with Amy Holman, Assistant Secretary of State for Economic and Business Affairs, US Department of State. He acknowledged the importance of Pak-US economic partnership in Pakistan’s socio-economic development and thanked the US for its support. He highlighted the investment potential in agriculture, IT, energy, mines & minerals sectors and invited US enterprises to invest in these areas.
In the meeting with the team of Deutsche Bank, the Finance Minister gave a detailed briefing on the state of Pakistan’s economy and expressed satisfaction that the country’s credit ratings had recently been upgraded by Fitch and Moody’s. He informed me that a Sustainable Finance Framework (SFF) was being developed which will enable the country to access the green international capital market.
Finance Minister gave a talk on Pakistan’s economic outlook at the Wilson Center which was moderated by Michael Kugelman, Director of the Wilson Center’s South Asia Institute. He highlighted the performance of the economy over the last year and talked about major reforms including an increase in the tax-to-GDP ratio through broadening the tax base, expenditure control through subsidy rationalization, reforms in the energy sector, SoE governance reforms, providing a level playing field to businesses and building climate resilience. The event concluded with a Q&A session.
The Finance Minister met with the team of Standard Chartered Bank. He appreciated the Bank’s longstanding partnership with Pakistan. He informed that the government was constantly engaged with rating agencies. The two sides discussed various proposals including a trade financing facility, a syndicated facility and explored further partnership in climate financing including carbon credits, green bonds, and debt swaps.
Finance Minister attended the Roundtable organized by the Coalition of Finance Ministers for Climate Action and participated in the group discussion on “Designing Tools, Instruments, and Policies to Scale Up Nature Finance”. The discussion focused on the lessons and best practices on the implementation of finance-related targets in the
Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) and solutions to close the biodiversity finance gap. The Finance Minister met with the team of FitchRatings. He appreciated that Pakistan’s credit ratings had been upgraded by Fitch from CCC to CCC+. He briefed the team about the performance of Pakistan’s economy.
He highlighted the measures being undertaken for revenue mobilization, expenditure rationalization, tariff reduction in the energy sector and an accelerated privatization programme. He expressed satisfaction over the fact that the government had sufficient reserves to repay the external debt liabilities for the current year.
In his meeting with His Excellency Mohamed bin Hadi Al Hussaini, Minister of State for Financial Affairs of the United Arab Emirates, Finance Minister appreciated the UAE’s continued support to the external account especially the role played by the UAE banks. He highlighted the investment potential in the agriculture, IT, Mines & Minerals sectors and invited UAE companies to invest in these sectors.
Other engagements of the Finance Minister included interviews with AFP and Reuters and meeting with the officials of World Bank and IMF on the Joint Domestic Revenue Mobilization Initiative (JDRMI).
