Iqbal Day 2024: Will November 9 Be a Public Holiday?

Iqbal Day, celebrated on November 9 to honor poet and philosopher Allama Iqbal, is stirring curiosity about a possible public holiday this year, particularly since it falls on a Saturday in 2024. Given its recent history, many are turning to social media to inquire if the day will be observed as a national holiday.

The holiday was initially suspended in 2015 under the Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) government, then reinstated in 2022. Last year, the Cabinet Division declared Iqbal Day a public holiday, fueling expectations for a similar decision in the coming days.

According to the official list of holidays for 2024, Iqbal Day is marked as a holiday, suggesting nationwide observance may proceed as planned.

On this day, educational institutions often host events where students recite Iqbal’s poetry and reflect on his contributions. Born on November 9, 1877, in Sialkot, Iqbal was pivotal in inspiring the Pakistan independence movement through his poetic vision. His works, translated into multiple languages, cement his legacy as a modern Sufi poet and global philosopher.

Though Iqbal passed away on April 21, 1938, his influence continues to shape Pakistani identity. As the nation awaits official confirmation on the holiday, many look forward to celebrating the legacy of the “Poet of the East.”
