Severe snowfall has hit Khunjerab Pass, at the high-altitude border between Pakistan and China in Gilgit-Baltistan, stranding three passenger vehicles and several cargo trucks. The passengers, stuck at 15,000 feet, are urgently calling for rescue.
This region, located over 15,000 feet above sea level, faces extreme weather conditions that lead to closure every winter. The high altitude causes low oxygen levels and harsh cold, making travel hazardous during these months.
Heavy snowfall in Gilgit-Baltistan’s upper areas has disrupted travel, creating significant challenges for those attempting to cross this route. Travelers are advised to check weather updates and delay plans to the area until conditions improve.
Simultaneously, Azad Jammu and Kashmir is witnessing a fresh wave of rain and snowfall. Dark clouds loom over Muzaffarabad, signaling an imminent downpour, and bringing colder temperatures to the area.
Mahodand Lake in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Kalam region also experienced its first winter snowfall, leaving the lake covered in a blanket of white. This picturesque sight has drawn the attention of winter tourism enthusiasts, though caution is advised due to the challenging weather.
Rainfall continues across Swat’s plains, including Mingora, with light snowfall in the upper areas of Malam Jabba and Kalam. The drop in temperature has residents and visitors layering up for warmth.
