YouTube is Showing Ads to Premium Users

The biggest selling point of YouTube Premium is that it provides an ad-free experience on the video-sharing platform, which is otherwise littered with advertisements. Most ad block extensions don’t work on YouTube anymore, which is often why people seek a Premium subscription.

However, despite having premium, some users are still seeing ads on the app. One such user reported his grievances on Reddit and shared the problem with YouTube’s support team. Here is a screenshot of the Reddit user’s communication with YouTube.

Apparently, the Reddit user was getting ads for NFL Sunday Tickets, after which they reached out to YouTube. The platform’s support team responded by saying that promotional ads can still appear for premium users “for specific partnerships or limited-time offers. These promotions are often targeted based on various factors, including your location, viewing history, and account settings.”

In short, YouTube has confirmed that this is not a bug or an issue on the platform’s side but official ads that are served even for Premium users, who specifically pay to avoid advertisements. The email ends with an apology and a reminder to the Reddit user that they also get YouTube Music for free with YouTube Premium.

One user in the comment section recommended turning off the “ad data” option in settings, but it is unclear if this works as there was no mention of it in the email.
