Bangladesh Relaxes Visa Rules for Pakistani Citizens

The interim government of Bangladesh has relaxed visa policies for Pakistani citizens, signalling a shift towards improved bilateral relations between the two countries. This change reflects efforts to foster closer ties since the departure of former pro-India Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, Bangladesh’s interim administration has removed the requirement for security clearance for Pakistani citizens, streamlining the travel process.

The Security Services Division of Bangladesh’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued orders to simplify visa procedures, while the foreign ministry instructed diplomatic missions worldwide to expedite visa applications for Pakistanis.

The decision comes amid strained India-Bangladesh relations, which hit a low following an attack on a Bangladeshi consulate in India on December 3, 2024. This incident prompted Bangladesh to summon India’s ambassador, further highlighting tensions between the neighbours.

Relations soured earlier this year after a student-led uprising in August ousted Sheikh Hasina’s autocratic regime. The former leader is now residing in India, leaving Bangladesh to recalibrate its foreign policy under new leadership.
