The Sindh Forensic DNA Laboratory has gained international recognition as the first forensic lab in Pakistan to achieve ISO certification.
Established in 2018 at the University of Karachi through a collaboration between the Sindh government and the International Center for Chemical and Biological Sciences (ICCBS), the lab has handled 8,500 DNA cases related to various accidents, incidents, and crimes.
Recently, the lab received accreditation from the Pakistan Scientific Accreditation Council under the international standard ISO 17025, following a third-party audit.
Dr. Ishtiaq Ahmed, in charge of the DNA Laboratory, told The Express Tribune that the ISO 17025 certification was successfully renewed after the annual performance audit.
Notably, this lab played a crucial role in the investigation of the Diya Bhel murder case. Its findings countered the propaganda by Indian media that sought to portray Pakistan as unsafe for its Hindu minority.
The case involved the brutal murder of Diya Bhel, a woman from the Bhel community, by an alleged sorcerer from within the same community.
