A report from the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has uncovered that power companies have issued detection bills worth billions of rupees, placing a significant financial strain on electricity consumers.
The report revealed that from April to June 2024, more than 1.3 million consumers received detection bills totaling over Rs35 billion.
Among these, Sukkur Electric Supply Company (SEPCO) led with bills amounting to Rs13 billion, followed by HESCO at Rs7.6 billion and LESCO at Rs3.7 billion.
PESCO was also highlighted for issuing over Rs1.5 billion in detection bills to 70,506 consumers during this period.
NEPRA criticized power companies for issuing these bills without proper verification, describing the practice as a way to artificially inflate revenue. The regulator also pointed out that this approach has increased corruption within the sector, further burdening consumers with unjustified charges.
The report raised serious concerns about the fairness of electricity billing practices, emphasizing that detection bills have created undue financial pressure on consumers while eroding trust in the power sector.
