A special judicial magistrate has sentenced vlogger Rajab Ali Butt to one year of community service after convicting him for illegally possessing a lion cub. The sentence requires Butt to create monthly vlogs promoting animal rights.
The verdict, issued by Magistrate Hamidul Rehman Nasir, specifies that Butt must record a five-minute video about animal rights in the first week of every month from February 2025 to January 2026.
These videos aim to raise public awareness about wildlife protection. The court noted that Butt admitted guilt for possessing the lion cub without a proper license, an offense under Section 21 of the Punjab Wildlife (Protection, Preservation, Conservation and Management) Act 1974.
The law prescribes penalties of up to two years in prison, a fine between Rs10,000 and Rs15,000, or both. Magistrate Nasir highlighted Butt’s remorse and willingness to educate others as factors for granting community service instead of traditional punishment.
The nature of the offense and Butt’s forthright admission made this an appropriate corrective measure.
The court assigned Probation Officer Maheen Solat to oversee the vlogger’s community service. Meanwhile, the lion cub has been transferred to the Lahore Wildlife Safari Zoo as part of an interim arrangement.
