Pakistan Reports First Monkeypox Case of This Year

Pakistan has recorded its first case of monkeypox (mpox) in 2025, according to ARY News.

The Ministry of Health spokesperson confirmed that the patient, who recently returned from Dubai on January 24, tested positive for the virus during screening at Peshawar Airport. This latest case brings the total number of Mpox cases in the country to 10 since the health emergency was declared.

The patient has been transferred to Services Hospital in Peshawar for treatment. The Ministry of Health reassured the public that effective measures are in place to contain the virus. The patient’s travel history to Gulf countries has raised concerns about potential transmission routes.

In a separate case, a passenger arriving from Sharjah exhibited symptoms of monkeypox during medical screening at the airport. The individual, identified as Javed Ahmed from Rajanpur, was promptly isolated as a precaution after testing positive for the virus.

Medical authorities have deemed the situation serious and are implementing strict protocols to prevent further spread.

About Monkeypox (Mpox)

Monkeypox is a viral disease caused by the Mpox virus. While the natural reservoir of the virus is still unknown, African rodents and non-human primates, such as monkeys, are suspected to be carriers and transmitters to humans.

Symptoms typically include a rash that begins 1 to 3 days after fever onset, starting on the face and spreading to other parts of the body. The rash evolves through stages: macules, papules, vesicles, pustules, and finally scabs. Other symptoms may include headache, muscle aches, exhaustion, and swollen lymph nodes.

The virus has an incubation period of 7 to 14 days, though it can range from 5 to 21 days. The illness generally lasts 2 to 4 weeks.

Health officials continue to monitor the situation and are urging the public to remain vigilant.
