Environmental and Animal Rights Consultants Pakistan (EARC-PK)—the country’s first animal and environmental law firm and research think tank—is pursuing a contempt case against the administrations of Faisalabad and Jhang for violating a court-imposed stay order on dog culling.
Despite clear directives from the Lahore High Court, led by Honorable Justice Shahid Karim, prohibiting the culling of stray dogs, reports emerged of mass dog killings in Faisalabad and Jhang. The illegal action disregards ethical animal welfare practices and constitutes a direct violation of a judicial stay order.
Justice Shahid Karim took immediate notice of the violations. The Faisalabad and Jhang administrations have been ordered to submit a reply to the court. The next hearing is scheduled for February 12, 2025.
EARC-PK has consistently advocated for humane solutions to the country’s stray dog population crisis, including vaccination and sterilization programs instead of indiscriminate culling. Their work aligns with international best practices and Pakistan’s legal framework.
The legal action against Faisalabad and Jhang’s administrations is a significant step forward for both environmental and animal rights in Pakistan. It could set a strong precedent, ensuring stricter enforcement of animal protection laws across the country.
