Illegal Stray Dog Killing Re-Emerges in Lahore

Despite clear orders from the Lahore High Court banning dog culling, ProPakistani has received an eyewitness report of stray dogs being killed in the provincial capital.

The witness reported seeing some dogs on her walk near Cavalry Ground in Cantonment Board Lahore. As she was coming back she heard 3-4 gunshots and saw the same dogs dead on her way home.

It should be noted that dog culling is banned across Punjab through the Hamza Khan v Government of Punjab decision that came out on January 14, 2024, by the Honorable Division Bench led by Honorable Justice Shahid Karim, argued by Environmental and Animal Rights Consultants Pakistan (EARC-PK) Pakistan’s 1st Animal and Environmental Law Firm.

EARC recently sued the Faisalabad and Jhang administrations for not following the court’s orders after similar reports about dog culling emerged in these cities. Justice Shahid Karim issued a notice to the administrations to submit a reply to the court. After hearing their response, the court issued orders against the Livestock Department of Faisalabad, demanding that they follow the policy otherwise action would be taken against the responsible officers.

With a similar incident happening in Lahore, it’s only a matter of time until action is taken against the responsible parties.
