The Healthcare Devices Association of Pakistan (HDAP) has called on the federal government to lift restrictions on importing medical equipment, citing delays caused by customs authorities following the expiration of regulatory exemptions on December 31, 2024.
HDAP Chairman Syed Umer Ahmed stated that importers must be registered with the Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (DRAP) to bring medical devices into the country.
However, he pointed out that the registration process is often delayed, sometimes taking years.
Previously, registered and unregistered importers were allowed to bring in medical equipment under temporary exemptions. Before the deadline expired, HDAP reached out to DRAP and the Ministry of Health, requesting an extension, but no decision has been made.
As a result, customs authorities are refusing to clear shipments. HDAP filed a petition with the Islamabad High Court (IHC), which ordered that no coercive action be taken. Despite this, shipments remain blocked.
Private hospitals have urged the government to find a solution to prevent shortages of essential medical devices. Meanwhile, DRAP has yet to issue an official response on the matter.
