Major Cities in Punjab to Get New Sewage and Drainage Systems

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has greenlit an ambitious plan to revamp the sewage and drainage systems across the province’s major cities, marking a historic first for Punjab, Express News reported.

The comprehensive initiative aims to address longstanding issues with urban infrastructure by implementing upgraded sewage, water drainage, stormwater management, and road repairs in 189 cities with populations exceeding 100,000.

For the first time, the government plans to establish sewage bypasses and disposal stations in urban areas, ensuring efficient waste management. Additionally, storage tanks will be constructed to quickly drain rainwater, which will be repurposed for irrigation and other practical uses—a significant step towards sustainable water management.

To maintain clean water quality, the plan includes the strategic installation of separate pipelines for clean water and sewage, ensuring no contamination occurs.

The overhaul extends to road infrastructure, with 30 kilometers of roads in each provincial constituency scheduled for construction and repair to prevent deterioration caused by poor drainage.

During a special meeting, Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz also approved the creation of model villages as part of the Punjab Development Program, promising swift action on its implementation.

Emphasizing the far-reaching impact, Maryam stated that the Clean Punjab Program will directly benefit 150 million residents, providing long-awaited solutions to Punjab’s chronic sewage and drainage challenges. “This new system will not only improve public services but also protect roads from damage, ensuring long-term infrastructure stability,” she assured.
