In an effort to tackle the growing traffic problems in Peshawar, authorities have decided to regulate rickshaw operations by introducing specific operating hours and colour codes. According to police sources, over 80,000 rickshaws will now operate under a new time schedule.
Out of these, 16,371 registered rickshaws will be allowed to run around the clock and will be painted green to distinguish them. Meanwhile, 30,000 unregistered rickshaws will be painted red and permitted to operate from 6:00 AM to 2:00 PM.
Another 30,000 unregistered rickshaws, marked in yellow, will be allowed on the roads from 2:00 PM to midnight.Officials say the move to restrict unregistered rickshaws to specific time slots is expected to significantly reduce traffic congestion across the city.
According to sources, a committee formed by the provincial government had reviewed and approved the plan following recommendations from the traffic police. Police officials believe this decision will not only improve traffic flow but also bring better discipline to Peshawar’s roads.
