Utility Stores Fire Over 3,500 Workers

Tensions are rising across Pakistan as workers and union leaders protest a major decision by the Utility Stores Corporation. The controversy began when letters were sent to regional managers, giving them the authority to dismiss employees in grades one to thirteen.

It was revealed that more than 3,500 contract workers have been dismissed from their jobs. Arif Shah, Secretary General of the All Pakistan Workers Alliance Utility Stores, confirmed the move and said the union considers these dismissals illegal.

He pointed to a Supreme Court injunction that, according to the union, protects the rights of these employees. The union has announced plans to file a writ for contempt of court on Monday.

The decision has sparked protests, with dismissed workers gathering at Scheme Mor in Lahore to voice their anger. The Utility Stores Union has strongly condemned the dismissals and is demanding immediate action.

Nawab Shah Niaz Hussain Brohi, a regional manager, wrote a letter in his own blood to JUI-F leader Maulana Fazlur Rehman, asking for his intervention. Brohi argued that Utility Stores were created to serve the poor and claimed that efforts to close them are part of a conspiracy by a powerful sugar mafia. He urged Maulana Fazlur Rehman to help protect the institution.

The situation remains tense as workers, union leaders, and management await further developments.
