The much-awaited dualization of the Rawalpindi-Kahuta Road, a vital route connecting Rawalpindi to Azad Kashmir, has officially been incorporated into the Public Sector Development Program (PSDP) for the fiscal year 2025-26.
The project, which carries an estimated cost of Rs. 23.84 billion, aims to improve infrastructure, reduce travel time, and address long-standing traffic and safety concerns along the corridor.
The project includes the construction of a four-lane overhead bridge at the Sihala Railway Gate and the development of bypasses in Sihala and Kahuta. Once completed, the travel time between Rawalpindi and Kahuta will be reduced to just 40 minutes.
The 28.4-kilometer stretch from Kacheri Chowk in Rawalpindi to Main Bazaar in Kahuta serves as a crucial link to Azad Kashmir and other surrounding regions. The road’s current single-lane condition and lack of proper infrastructure have led to frequent traffic congestion, accidents, and delays, with travel times often stretching beyond two hours.
The project, approved by the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) in July 2023, has been incorporated into the PSDP and will be supervised by the National Highway Authority (NHA), ensuring smoother and safer travel for thousands of commuters.
