A video went viral in which a foreign tourist, travel vlogger George Buckley, claimed that a famous resort in Hunza has been dumping its sewage into Attabad Lake, causing a foul smell and discoloration.. The famous resort in question is the Luxus Hunza Resort.
The influencer said a local had informed him about the alleged pollution, and he pointed to the brownish tint in parts of the lake as evidence. The video has since gone viral on social media, sparking outrage with people urging authorities to take action against the resort.
However, Luxus Hunza responded on its official Instagram stories, refuting the allegations of polluting Attabad Lake. The resort clarified that the brown discoloration is due to natural glacial silt, commonly found in the region’s stream runoff, not pollution. They stated,
We have come across a recent video circulating online that falsely accuses our hotel, Luxus Hunza, of discharging sewage into the lake. We strongly deny these baseless allegations.
The resort explained, “Luxus Hunza is more than just a resort—it is our home. We cherish its natural beauty as much, if not more, than anyone else. That’s why from day one, we have gone above and beyond to ensure our operations are fully sustainable and eco-friendly.”
They emphasized that an environmental impact survey was conducted before operations began, and all required environmental approvals were obtained. “Our waste management system is fully compliant with environmental regulations and poses no harm to the lake or its ecosystem,” they added.
Luxus Hunza also addressed Buckley’s claims directly, saying, “The video in question misrepresents natural glacial silt—commonly found in the region’s stream runoff—as pollution. This is a serious misinterpretation of natural phenomena, and we encourage anyone seeking the truth to reach out for facts instead of spreading unfounded claims.” They invited questions, stating, “We are open to any questions and would be happy to clarify further,” and thanked supporters, noting, “Thank you for your understanding and continued support.”
